“The Call” - Jessie Pope

T
I think the title means that people are shouting, or calling, to each other in battle.
P
It is asking who is ready to go into the trenches.
Will you do what the French did and fight?
Are you excited to be part of the war?
Do you want to be the one that saves your own life and others lives too?

Do you want to wear the uniform of a soldier?
Do you desire to be a part of the action in war?
Do you want get fit and exercise?
Or would you rather wait till it was too late?

Do you want to be congratulated for your devoted work?
Do you want to get high up in authority?
When our country has won, do you want to be part of the reason for its success?

The author is very patriotic and believes that to go to war is a great honour. The author is trying to show that to go to war is to do something great for your country and people. The author also makes it seem as though they can’t, and so won’t, lose.
S
At first the author is talking about what you’ll do in the war. Then the author talks about what you will get out of the war. And finally the author is talking about how you will be so admired and loved by your country if you go to war.
T
I think the title of poem means that the young men are called to go to war and how it is an honour.
T
I think the author’s purpose for writing “The Call” is to explain the great honour it is to go to war and fight for your country. She also wants to show how one will be rewarded for his courage in war.
